In my last post A Cue From The Horse I spoke about figuring out when your horse has too much pent up energy.  In this post I would like give you further insight.

When a horse has excess energy it is extremely stressful for him. That stress needs an outlet.  If you do not work off the energy your horse will need to find another outlet for that stress.

What are some possible outlets for that stress?

Bucking, spooking, jigging, not paying attention to name a few…  If you want to be as safe as possible give a horse the exercise he needs on the ground where you can safely channel that energy before you get into
the saddle.

The next time you see a horse that is running around with that crazed look in his eye understand that he probably needs more ground work.

I am really trying to drive this point home because it will help make your riding time more enjoyable when you can begin with a horse that is “ready to work”.  Fredi says “When you think your horse is ready to ride, lope him some more.”  Words to live by.
